Instructor-led training, elearning, microlearning, social learning. Each has its champions in the learning business. I often hear champions challenging each other and questioning the value of the other learning methods.
The question to really ask is SO WHAT? They are all means to an end – performance. The path to performance for many of us has been through the classroom in order to acquire knowledge that others think we need to do our jobs effectively. However, the tolerance for a long, comprehensive curriculum is waning. Time is the driver more than money. But money is at the root of it all. If I can do my job effectively – and with compliance – without expending significant time to acquire knowledge and skills, I win!
- New IV devices are being implemented in a consortium of 5 hospitals. There was training for the nursing staff about the process of connecting and managing the new IV controls, but it was 4 weeks prior. The first shift using these devices is Monday at 7:00 a.m. It is vital to know which nurses are aware of the new devices and ready to implement at the start of the shift.
- A large US bank is making a bold move and offering a new checking account service with no fees. There are no catches or conditions. It is vital that all representatives of the bank in the call center and in the branches are aware of the offering, details, and benefits for new customers. There is time to start the information flowing internally about the new offering since it rolls out January 1 and a series of communications is planned. However, before the holidays, the management team needs to verify that everyone received the information and understands it completely in order to make this big splash in the market.
In both cases, there could be well-planned curriculum designed and developed. But there also needs to be short, targeted messages, updates, and assessments since business and operational success depends on the learning and performance changes by the workforce. As noted above, those assets can be in many formats and in the relevant languages for the staff. The prefix to ‘learning’ – e, micro, social, etc. – can be matched to the message, audience, environment, and urgency. So what? At the end of the day, performance is the only indicator of success!!!
